About the job:
The Real Deal is looking for an enterprising reporter to cover the real estate technology — aka proptech — beat.
It’s never been a busier time on the beat: Real estate is ripe for technological advancement and investors are pouring cash into startups looking to take on the prospect. Many startups are now taking advantage of the IPO-friendly climate and going public — especially on the SPAC route.
The reporter will cover the ecosystem of founders and startups from seed stage to unicorn status, as well as key investors funding the surge. News stories will focus on funding rounds, M&A activity and IPOs. Some familiarity with public markets is a plus.
The reporter will have their own branded, dedicated weekly newsletter in which to curate the biggest real tech news of the week.
Companies to cover include but are not limited to Zillow, Redfin, CoStar, Opendoor, Offerpad, Porch.com, as well as investors such as Fifth Wall, Camber Creek and Metaprop.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in covering money and power and a keen desire to learn how the industry brings together elements of politics, business, entertainment, finance and law. The ability to break news is a must, as is the ability to cultivate sources among startup founders, company executives and investors, pitch enterprise story ideas and write clean copy on deadline. Experience in business or technology reporting is a plus.
- At least five years of reporting experience, preferably in a breaking news environment
- Ability to break news and pursue enterprise work
- Can write clean copy with a bite
- Ability to juggle short- and long-term projects
- Sees the possibilities for groundbreaking stories in the real estate industry
Qualified applicants should send a cover letter, resume and three clips to [email protected] Please put “Technology Reporter” in the subject line.
