ZSD Corporation’s controversial West Loop condo project is on the verge of becoming a reality after winning a key city approval this week.

The City Council’s Zoning Committee endorsed the Chicago developer’s plan to build the 25-unit building at 123 South Peoria Street near Mary Bartelme Park, according to Block Club Chicago.

The project sparked heated opposition from some neighbors, even leading Alderman Walter Burnett (27th) to storm out of a public meeting on the project earlier this year.

At Tuesday’s committee meeting, Burnett said ZSD principal Zev Salomon addressed concerns over affordable housing in the building by agreeing to build two more units for lower-income residents than the city requires, according to Block Club.

The building now heads to the full City Council for approval next month.

It would join a growing number of condo projects in the West Loop, including JK Equities’ planned 42-unit building at 1400 West Monroe Street, the 32-unit Eveq complex at 14 North Bishop Street, Sulo Development’s proposed 73-unit building at 19 North May Street and Related Midwest’s 36-story condo tower at 170 North Peoria Street.
