The embattled 107-unit Teachers Village project in Humboldt Park is facing renewed opposition, just as the Chicago Plan Commission is expected to vote on the plan.

Alderman Daniel La Spata wants to postpone that vote because he is concerned about whether the project will benefit the community, according to Block Club Chicago.

The controversial project to redevelop Humboldt Elementary School into 107 apartments and five townhomes has been in the works since 2016. Under the current proposal from developer RBH Group, nearly one quarter of the units would be reserved as affordable for residents earning less than 60 percent of medium income. Another 35 percent of the units would be set aside for “middle-income” teachers. A previous version of the proposal also included 14,000 square feet of retail.

RBH purchased the property in February for $4.9 million, Cook County records show. The school has been vacant since 2013, when it was forced to closed along with 49 other schools.

La Spata — who won office in February — said in June that the Teachers Village project doesn’t meet his standards and asked the Newark, N.J.-based RBH to return to the drawing board.

“There is still a lot of tension with the community,” La Spata said, according to Block Club. “I think we can get it there, but we are not there yet.” [Block Club]Jacqueline Flynn
