Chicago residents snitch on nonessential businesses that continue to operate

The mayor is encouraging residents to report such businesses through the 311 system

About 500 complaints of nonessential Chicago businesses operating in violation of the governor’s stay-at-home order have been submitted to the city so far, and more are likely to come as a result of the mayor’s directive.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot is urging residents to report such businesses, including restaurants, bars, yoga studios and hair salons, through the 311 system, the Chicago Tribune reported. She’s also encouraging people to submit complaints of employers that aren’t granting them sick leave.

Businesses that aren’t considered essential and remain open could face fines of up to $10,000.

On Friday, the city issued a violation notice to Bikram Yoga West Loop, which could be fined at least $500, according to the report.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker just extended his stay-at-home order through April.

Under the order, essential businesses can remain open, but nonessential businesses must stay closed in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Restaurants and bars can continue carryout and pick-up, but all dine-in service was ordered to stop.
