Lyon returns with August’s top five home sales in Lake County

Agent Ann Lyon of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate returned to the top of Lake County’s luxury housing market last month.

After selling the fifth-priciest home in the suburban county north of Chicago in June and then missing out on the area’s most expensive deals in July, Lyon notched its priciest sale in August with a striking $7.5 million estate in Lake Forest. Other homes in the top five ranged from $3.8 million to $2.7 million.

The property Lyon listed has ties to the woman who is said to be based on Daisy Buchanan from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic “The Great Gatsby.”

Lyon has another major sale in Lake Forest that hasn’t yet closed. The mansion formerly owned by the widow of the quintessential 1980s filmmaker John Hughes’ went under contract after one week on the open market. It was listed for $15 million.

The figures were collated by Zillow from information provided by Midwest Real Estate Data and doesn’t include every off-market deal. Read on for more information on the top five.

1. Rosemary Road, Lake Forest, $7.5 million
The six-bedroom, 11,600-square-foot home, known as “La Vieille Maison” hit the market in March 2021 with an asking price of $10.5 million, before it closed on August 1.

The home on the 5.2-acre estate was originally built in 1888 for a Chicago map publisher. The Rosemary Road mansion was remodeled in 1910 for well-to-do newlyweds William and Ginevra King Mitchell.

Fitzgerald met King Mitchell, one of Chicago’s “Big Four” debutantes during World War I, when they were teenagers in his hometown of St. Paul, Minn. After he visited her at her parent’s home in Lake Forest, King Mitchell shifted her attention to the much wealthier son of a local bank president, whom she married.

2. Egandale Road, Highland Park, $3.8 million

This four-bedroom, five-bathroom home closed on August 2. The 5,100-square-foot home was designed by Bauhaus architect Tony Grunsfeld in 1997. The one-acre property includes an in-ground pool and 100-feet of private beach on Lake Michigan. The main area has panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Other features include a three-car heated garage with an electric charging station.

The home was originally listed in June for $5 million, making its closing price 23 percent below its initial ask.

3. W Roberts Lane, Barrington, $3.1 million

This five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home closed on August 22. Built in 2017 on two-and-a-half acres in Barrington Oaks Estates, the property is surrounded by additional nature conservancy land, according to the listing.

Amenities include a slot-edge pool, raised hot tub set in limestone tile, a recreation room with tiered ceilings, two game rooms, a gym featuring a yoga studio and an electric car charger in one of the two two-car attached garages.

4. W Little Saint Marys Road, Mettawa, $3 million

This 14-acre property is part home and part equestrian center, and closed on August 26. Named Sapphire Farms, the property has been used for training and boarding horses. The property includes an eighteen stall barn with heated indoor arena, tack room, second floor viewing room with kitchenette, office, multiple all-weather turnouts, a hay barn, 280 x 140 foot outdoor arena and a rolling pasture. Built in 1982, the 2,500-square-foot main home includes two bedrooms and three bathrooms.

It was originally listed in 2021 for $5 million, before several price cuts that brought the asking price down to $3.7 million.

5. N Green Bay Road, Lake Forest, $2.7 million

This six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home in Lake Forest closed on August 12. The 6,000-square-foot home was built in 1929 on 2.3 acres. It was recently renovated, according to the listing, and includes a sauna, home gym, wine cellar and hot tub. The home was listed in June for $2.95 million before closing in August.
