Northern VA, Dallas rank among top data center hubs

Northern Virginia is home to more than 250 data centers – the most in the United States and five times as many as the runner-up market, according to a report from CoreSite.

The region is so popular for data centers because of its proximity to Washington, D.C. and its central location along the East Coast. It’s also inland – but not too inland – providing a more stable operating environment than other locales. Additionally, Washington D.C. alone has about 100 data centers – enough to put it seventh on the list of markets with the most centers in the county.

The market with the second-most amount of data centers is Dallas, with more than 150. The city is a magnet for the asset class because of its central location and low real estate costs. Power costs there are also lower than the national average, according to CoreSite’s report.

Rounding out the top five markets for data centers in the U.S. is Silicon Valley (150), the New York tri-state region (130+) and Chicago (120). Los Angeles and Phoenix are also top data center markets, but CoreSite did not have figures for those cities.
