Kohl’s to close 9 California stores

Kohl’s Department Stores plans to close nine underperforming locations in California, including the San Gabriel and West Hills stores in Los Angeles County and an Upland store in San Bernardino County, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

The stores are slated to close by June 19.

“This is surprising,” Jasmine Lopez, an employee at the Sally Beauty Supply store next to the Kohl’s in Upland, told the Daily News. “Our plaza’s pretty busy but we’ll probably see less customers.”

The closures, which will also affect nine other stores across the country, are expected to generate annual savings of around $45 million. The company reported annual profits of $673 million in 2014, compared to $867 million in 2014, according to its most recent earnings report. [Daily News]Katherine Clarke
