Seven-acre affordable housing project finally underway in South LA

An affordable housing project that’s been in the works for more than seven years could finally be breaking ground in South L.A.

The Slauson and Wall Green Space and Affordable Housing Project would bring 120 affordable housing units and four acres of park space to 5867 South Los Angeles Street, Curbed reported. The site currently houses a group of industrial buildings. The L.A. City Council unanimously approved the properties for demolition Tuesday.

It’s been a long road for the troubled project.

The now-shuttered Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles acquired the property in 2010 and tapped nonprofit organizations TRUST South LA and Abode Communities as the developers. But the project lagged as the CRA/LA dissolved in 2012.
