San Gabriel-based developer Tauan Chen is one step closer to building a 125-key hotel in the Pico-Union neighborhood.

The Los Angeles City Council approved a zone change request Tuesday to allow for the project, at 2268 W. Pico Boulevard, Curbed reported.

Councilmember Gil Cedillo of the 1st District filed a motion in June for the department to consider the zone change.

The project would “enhance the immediate neighborhood and surrounding community by providing amenities on the ground floor, such as a restaurant and meeting space, as well as much needed reasonably priced hotel rooms west of the 110 Freeway serving visitors to the Convention Center,” he wrote at the time.

An entity connected to Chen, which also owns a Holiday Express Inn in Westlake, purchased the half-acre site for $4.4 million last year.

If approved, the hotel will be one of just four in the Pico-Union neighborhood, which is populated mostly by rundown retail stores and restaurants, according to the motion. [Curbed] – Naiwen Tian
