Plans for the Vermont Village development site could shift from shops and restaurants to affordable housing and a boarding school.
The Board of Supervisors for L.A. County will consider a recommendation from the County’s Chief Executive Office next week to condemn about 4.2 acres of property along the 8400 and 8500 blocks of South Vermont Avenue owned by the Sassony Group and CRA/LA, according to Urbanize. The move is expected to cost about $15.7 million and would lead to the construction of affordable housing, a central transit plaza and a boarding school on the site.
Previous plans were for a 127,000-square-foot shopping and restaurant complex, but there has been virtually no progress on this plan since a groundbreaking ceremony two years ago.
The affordable housing complex would stand six stories tall and include 180 apartments, 100 parking spots and 50,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. The boarding school would be six stories tall with 20 faculty apartments and 200 dormitories, and the transit plaza would span 52,000 square feet of space for bus transfers and recreation.
