Relevant Group wants to transform landmark Citizen News building in Hollywood
The local development firm will add restaurant, event space to 37K sf property
Relevant Group is adding a restaurant and event space to its assemblage of hotel projects in Hollywood.
The local real estate development firm is planning an adaptive reuse of the 36,600-square-foot landmark Citizen News building as a restaurant and event space, according to Curbed. The 88-year-old former newspaper headquarters at 1545-1551 N. Wilcox Avenue is sandwiched between its Tommie Hotel and Thompson Hollywood projects.
Across Selma Avenue is Relevant’s Dream Hotel and Selma Hotel. Those projects make the company one of the most active hotel developers in Hollywood. It’s also redeveloping the Morrison Hotel project in South Park.
The firm wants to install two restaurants on the first floor of the Citizen News building, combining for 14,000 square feet. They will include outdoor dining space. It will add another 16,000 square feet of event space on its second floor, according to Los Angeles city planning documents. The alleyways around the building would be landscaped.
The Art Deco building was completed in 1931 for the Citizen-News, a progressive publication that campaigned against social injustice and police corruption, according to a city report on the building.
