Onni Group’s 700-unit DTLA tower project gets green light
The Vancouver-based firm now has 8 properties in Downtown alone, including Times Mirror Square

The Vancouver-based developer that has become a ubiquitous presence in Los Angeles, secured city approval to construct a 60-story residential complex in Downtown, according to Urbanize.
The City Council gave the go-ahead for Onni’s 700-unit tower project at 1000 S. Hill Street. At 760 feet, the development — which fought off an appeal from labor groups — will be one of the tallest towers planned in the city.
Onni is also planning 15,000 square feet of retail space and aims to open the development by 2022.
The project is a block from Onni’s 516-unit tower at 825 S. Hill, which opened late last year. That development stands as the firm’s largest completed project in the city. Onni now owns eight properties in Downtown alone, and has several of those in development.
Its largest project in the works is the Times Mirror Square property redevelopment in the Civic Center area. Onni wants to renovate the historic L.A. Times buildings there — the Times has since moved its office to El Segundo — and add 1,127 units and a mix of commercial space across two new towers. The Council denied appeals opposing the project, which paved the way for development.
Onni’s 700-unit project project on South Hill Street also faced appeals by two local labor groups. On Tuesday, the Council dismissed those appeals.
