Fay flood claims rising

Counties along the Treasure Coast, particularly St. Lucie and
Okechobee, are the loci of flood damage from the heavy rains of
Tropical Storm Fay, but many homeowners lack flood coverage, officials
say. Robert Hunter, former head of the National Flood Insurance
program, said that many of the flood maps are outdated. St. Lucie
County’s maps were last updated in 1991, before much of today’s massive
development. Federal officials are not expected to publish a new flood
map for years. Federal regulation requires banks to ensure that
homeowners with federally backed mortgages in high-risk areas have
flood coverage.
