Coral Gables lawyer charged in mortgage fraud

Delaila Estefano, a Coral Gables lawyer, was charged last week for her alleged
involvement in a mortgage deal using identity theft to buy a Coconut Grove house for three times its value. Estefano, an attorney for nine years, and two men, John Romney and Michael Martinez, were charged with first-degree grand theft, organized fraud, and using a fake ID. The arrests were made by the Miami-Dade Police Department Mortgage Fraud Task Force, created to deal with mortgage fraud that occurred during South Florida’s housing boom. She will be arraigned on the charges October 24.
