Regional bankruptcy rates soar

The number of South Floridians filing for bankruptcy jumped by almost
50 percent in November compared with the same period last year.
Statistics show that 1,550 consumer filings were recorded last month, a year
over year increase but a 27 percent drop from the 1,972 consumer
filings in October — the most in any month this year. There were 1,047
consumer filings in November 2007, according to bankruptcy court
statistics. Business bankruptcy filings dropped. There were 102
businesses that filed for bankruptcy last month, down from 120 in
November 2007.
