State lawmakers object to U.S. Sugar deal

Miami-Dade County representatives to the state legislature want to go
over the $1.34 billion plan to buy Everglades land from U.S. Sugar, and will voice their objection in a meeting next week. Rep. Juan
C. Zapata, a West Kendall Republican and chair of the Miami-Dade
legislative delegation, notified the South Florida Water Management
District that many lawmakers felt the deal should be reconsidered in
light of the state’s economic crisis. U.S. Sugar said this week that it has had several other bidders for the land.
