Sale rumors surround Palm Beach post office

Palm Beach’s main post office is not for sale, not slated for destruction and not becoming a restaurant, despite persistent talk of these possibilities. Gary Sawtelle, Tampa-based spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said the building has never been listed for sale. The talk stems from an inquiry by the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, which heard that the Postal Service was entertaining the idea of selling the building and asked about buying the circa-1936 structure at 95 N. County Road. John Ripley, the foundation’s president, said the group contacted one of the Postal Service’s real estate brokers in Washington, D.C., inquiring about its potential sale price. The postal service never responded, he said. The story has taken on a life of its own, and the Palm Beach Civic Association has received perhaps five to 10 phone calls in the last month from residents who say they have heard the building is for sale and may be closing or consolidating with the post office on South County Road, said Ned Barnes, the association president.
