Patrick Newman died three years ago, but the legacy of his condo-flipping scheme lives on in a series of lawsuits National City Bank has brought against attorneys, appraisers and businesses it alleges assisted the fraud. Newman was under investigation by the FBI when he died in 2006. National City has sued Melbourne attorneys Charles A. Schillinger and Christopher J. Coleman, appraisers Mary K. Gibson and Douglas E. Lightcap and the Atlantic Hotel Condominium Association where Newman was a board member, saying they helped Newman get $14 million in loans. An attorney for two of the defendants called the suit frivolous.
