City commissioners concluded a lengthy debate by approving a 10-story office tower on the west side of the Sawgrass Expressway, on the edge of the Everglades. The city created a new zoning category that will allow the project to move forward on its 22-acre site. Dennis Mele, attorney for the developer, said his client should be ready to break ground on the 10-story, 634,000 square foot Everglades Hotel by the end of 2009. Construction should take two years. The office tower would come later, once tenants are found.
