Almost three times as many Palm Beach County homeowners failed to pay their property taxes this year as five years ago, according to an analysis of 2008 tax bills by the Palm Beach Post. There were 17,532 unpaid tax bills this year, about half of them under $2,500. Many homeowners who may be having trouble paying their bills choose to skip their tax payments rather than their mortgage or car payments, because under Florida law, it takes seven years for a homeowner to lose his or her home because of unpaid taxes. Missed mortgage payments lead to foreclosure much sooner.
