Mall could fill empty Palm Beach Gardens trailer park

The deserted Hilltop Gardens mobile home park, a 23-acre site in Palm Beach Gardens, may soon be rezoned to allow for the construction of up to two stories and 250,000 square feet of commercial space. The owner, Standard Pacific Homes, wants to put the land to use, and has not been able to make progress with any residential development and is now angling for a shopping center, hotel or office park. The last of Hilltop’s 150 residents were evicted in 2005, having been paid up to $6,000 to relocate their mobile homes under the Florida Mobile Home Act. However, the street layout and the land’s proximity to the dead-end of Congress Avenue makes commercial development a challenging proposition, said John True, a Juno Beach real estate agent. He said streets would need to be extended and traffic patterns rerouted to make it a viable commercial development site. The city council is slated to vote on the proposed change tonight.
