West Palm Beach pushes for new Flagler Drive museum

February 19, 2010 04:38PM

West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel wants to put a regional science
museum and aquarium on Flagler Drive, on the site of the old Helen
Wilkes Hotel. The South Florida Science Museum project would also have
a 15-story hotel in a complex across from the recently revitalized
waterfront. West Palm Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency purchased
the site of the demolished 1920s-era hotel in September for $6
million, and wants to support projects that will preserve the
unobstructed view of the Intracoastal Waterway. The cost could be
high, especially for a city that has already spent $30 million on its
new waterfront park and faces budget shortfalls from reduced property
tax revenues. [Palm Beach Post]
