Deerfield shopping complex set for makeover

The city of Deerfield Beach is slated to kick off a $1.86 million construction project this month that will transform the Cove, a large shopping center off Hillsboro Boulevard, into a destination that serves as the gateway to the community. Last week, the City Commission approved a contract with West Construction to begin work at the complex, which will include re-landscaping the parking lot, fixing drainage and sidewalks and building a clock tower at the entrance. Meanwhile, businesses in the center are worried that the work will present them with new economic struggles they can’t afford after already seeing sales drop during the recession. For that reason, construction will be done in two phases to avoid the busy holiday season. The first will begin this month and end before Christmas. The second will begin in April and is slated for completion next fall. [Sun Sentinel]
