Baptist delays UM health center plan

Baptist’s Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables

Baptist Health South Florida announced yesterday that it questions
whether the University of Miami should be allowed to build a health
center on its main campus in Coral Gables. “It’s huge,” Baptist Chief
Executive Brian Keeley said of the plan. “It’s 200,000 square feet —
thats bigger than the Orange Bowl. “Baptist spokesperson Jo Baxter said
the new health center would be almost as large as Doctors Hospital,
across the street from the Gables campus, which is 255,000 square feet.
UM is looking to compete with Baptist, which dominates southern
Miami-Dade County. The university intends the facility to serve
students, faculty and staff, and said it has been publicly discussed
since June. [Miami
