Miami contractor pleads guilty to tax fraud

Miami contractor Axel Mercado has pled guilty to tax evasion in federal
court. According to federal court documents, Mercado, who owns
contracting firm Mercado Enterprises, attempted to evade a large part of
his company’s federal employment taxes. To avoid these obligations, the
documents say Mercado would have checks written to shell companies that
were supposedly legitimate subcontractors hired to do work for the
company. He pled guilty to a one-count information charging him with tax
evasion. His actions resulted in a lost of at least $352,605. TRD
