Barnes & Noble could be a potential taker for some of the retail spaces Borders will vacate as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. Barnes & Noble, which is trying to find a strategy to avoid the same fate as its rival, has already put itself up for sale and said today that it would suspend its quarterly shareholder dividend in an effort to channel cash into digital media investments and “any other market opportunities that may present themselves.” Chief executive William Lynch said in a conference call today that taking over the vacated Borders stores is a possibility. Fifteen Florida Borders stores are slated for closure, including locations in Fort Lauderdale and Plantation. [SFBJ]
