FPL to demolish Port Everglades plant

Florida Power & Light will demolish and replace its Port Everglades
power plant as part of a $1 billion plan to build a greener facility.
The company said the project would reduce air emissions by 90 percent at
the new plant, along with generating more electricity. “Modernizing our
Port Everglades facility makes the best sense for continuing to meet
our generation needs, while offering many benefits to FPL customers,”
said spokesperson Neil Nissan. The plant has been at its current
location since the 1960s, and calls for modernization have been going on
for at least a decade. “It’s a long time coming, but it’s good news,”
said George Cavros, a member of the Broward Sierra Club. [Miami
