Public hearings over commercial corridor billboards delayed

Public hearings to address digital billboards on two properties in West Miami — one city-owned site at 1811 Southwest 67th Avenue and a privately owned strip mall at 1200 Southwest 57th Avenue — have been pushed back to a later date, angering residents, the Miami Herald reported.

Over 20 residents had packed into the City Hall commission chambers this week for the hearings when Mayor Eduardo Muhiña proposed to continue discussions Aug. 3 because there were absentees.

“This is something that a lot of citizens are concerned about and will have a lasting effect in the city,” Vice Mayor Juan Blanes said. “An item of this magnitude deserves the attention of a full presence on this board. I agree we should hear the items at a later date.”

Last year, commissioners approved the installation of digital billboards along commercial corridors in the city but residents have since complained that the lighting is intrusive and has negatively affected their property values. [Miami Herald]
