Former PBC Commissioner convicted of fraud gets back real estate license

Warren Newell, the former Palm Beach County Commissioner convicted on fraud charges in 2009, has regained his real estate license, the Palm Beach Post reported. Newell’s license was revoked by state regulators eight months ago because he failed to properlty notify the state when he pleaded guilty to the fraud charges in 2007.

The former commissioner was sentenced to 36 months in prison in 2009 for honest services fraud, after voting on projects in which he had an undisclosed financial stake. But Newell has been working to get the felony conviction overturned, as he believes his offenses were merely conflicts of interests because they did not involve bribes.

Now, Newell is cleared to practice real estate again. He claimed he did notify the state’s Real Estate Commission of his transgressions, but only after the deadline passed.

Newell plans to keep the license inactive until his legal issues are resolved. “I have had my license for 32 years,” he said. “I would hope I would continue some of that.” [Palm Beach Post]
