Critics seek to overturn approval for renovation of Royal Poinciana Plaza in Palm Beach

Three separate entities have filed appeals challenging the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s Jan. 16 approval of a proposed renovation that would install a Del Frisco’s Grill at the Royal Poinciana Plaza, the Palm Beach Daily News reported.

Former landmarks board member William Cooley filed an appeal on the day of the ruling, arguing that the board did not give proper notice of the item and also that the renovation was approved after a portion of the design was “changed on the fly.”

The condominium just south of the plaza, Palm Beach Towers, and the John L. Volk Foundation, filed separate appeals. The landmarked plaza was designed by the foundation’s namesake, the late John Volk.

In a letter to the town clerk, Lory Volk, the Volk Foundation’s vice chairwoman, wrote that the commission’s vote occurred after a “flawed review process,” and claimed that the architect, Keith Spina, did not provide complete supporting documents. Lory Volk went on to suggest that the plan submitted by Spina was not accurate.
