Today Related Urban and Opa-locka Community Development Corporation break ground on Opa-locka’s first affordable housing project, the Town Center Apartments, the firms announced. The developers hope the project will catalyze the redevelopment of Opa-locka’s Downtown District.

The six-story, 127-unit project will also be Opa-locka’s first transit-oriented development as it is within walking distance to the city’s tri-rail station, a statement from the groups said. The OLCDC, Miami-Dade County Housing Finance Authority, Miami-Dade County Public Housing and Community Development and Bank of America have together contributed over $19.5 million in funds for the project.

Alberto Milo Jr., principal of Related Urban, Opa-locka Mayor Myra Taylor, Miami Dade County District 1 Commissioner Barbara Jordan and president and CEO of OLCDC, Willie Logan, will all attend the ground breaking at 551 Fisherman Street. –-Christopher Cameron
