Boca Raton’s city council approved the city’s first planned so-called mobility housing following a December ordinance to encourage pedestrianism and greater use of the city’s public transportation, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

The eight-story, 200-unit apartment building at Boca Village Corporate Centre is considered within walking distance of the Boca Raton Tri Rail Station at 680 Yamato Road, the Sentinel said.

“We are looking at this as a poster child for planned mobility, but this has been a struggle,” the city’s developmental services manager John Hixenbaugh told the newspaper. “It has taken us a year to get here.”

The developer, Mill Creek Residential Trust LLC, has committed to a $31,200 annual contribution for multi-modal marketing and discounts on transit passes, as well as showers and lockers for pedestrians and cyclists. The developer is also required to contribute $49,000 every year toward the city’s transit operations, the paper said. [Sun-Sentinel]Emily Schmall
