Coconut Grove’s convention center received its burn notice when the USA Networks TV shoot had its final wrap, so an Omni district redevelopment agency is accepting bids to convert an unused former school into a state-of-the-art studio.

“[We will] hopefully attract the movie industry back to South Florida and give them an up-to date facility to shoot movies, TV shows, TV commercials,” Pieter A. Bockweg, executive director of the Miami Omni Community Redevelopment Agency, told a local NBC affiliate.

The Omni CRA would reimburse the winning bidder up to $10.5 million for the cost of developing the property near the now vacant former headquarters of the Miami Herald, which Genting Group plans to redevelop into a mixed-use complex. The funds for the studio would come from property taxes.
