The $1 billion redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center is off.

City commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to kill the 52-acre project, which had been awarded to the South Beach ACE development team last summer, the Miami Herald reported. The city plans to restart the bidding process, but just for the renovation of the convention center. A hotel development is still part of the city’s vision for the area, but that project would be pursued separately.

Despite the vote to scrap the redevelopment, commissioners said they are in favor of an enhanced convention center during Wednesday’s meeting.

A new bid proposal for the convention center is expected in March, with a proposal for the hotel project to follow in April. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
