Some Miami-Dade commissioners gave preliminary approval to a ballot question that would give voters the chance to clarify the authority the county’s property appraiser has.

A county committee, which includes a group of commissioners, approved the proposed ballot question during Thursday’s meeting, the Miami Herald reported. If the full commission signs off, voters would decide whether the appraiser’s office should answer to the county or operate independently. It is expected to vote on the proposal next month.

“We would set its budget, but at least it would give more of an independence to the work that they do,” Commissioner Esteban Bovo said. Bovo sponsored the measure.

Any change to the appraiser position would take effect at the beginning of 2017. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
