Florida counties push for expanded hotel tax

Florida counties that want to tax travel websites such as Expedia, Travelocity and Hotels.com will make their case to the Florida Supreme Court next month.

Eighteen Florida counties, including Broward, argue that online fees and room charges should be taxed, according to the Daily Business Review.

“These guys charge a certain rate for a hotel room. That’s the deal that’s struck with the customer,” said Dion of Nabors Giblin & Nickerson in Fort Lauderdale. “We believe that’s the ‘total consideration,’ and that’s what our argument’s going to be.”

The issue reached the Supreme Court after the counties appealed a 2-1 decision of the First District Court of Appeal that only the Legislature can impose a new tax. [Daily Business Review] – Christopher Cameron
