David Beckham and his backers are apparently moving on from their pursuit of a Major League Soccer stadium at PortMiami.

Beckham’s real estate confidant, John Alschuler, says the group is now making a downtown deep-water boat slip its top choice. A meeting with Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez preceded Alschuler’s disclosure that the slip site between Museum Park and AmericanAirlines Arena is the new priority. City voters would have to approve the plan.

“Our goal has always been to build a great stadium along the waterfront,” Alschuler told the Herald. “We view this as a meaningful step in the right direction.”

Gimenez suggested filling the slip earlier this month. A formal stadium agreement must be hashed out and allowed by city and county commissioners before a referendum is scheduled. [Miami Herald]Eric Kalis
