SoFla-based LGBT realtors to host first national convention

Some 59 percent of Americans now live in one of 30 states where same-sex couples can marry, and a South Florida-based national association of LGBT real estate professionals is gearing up to tap into that market. The organization will have its first national convention Tuesday night in Fort Lauderdale.

“We feel the overall climate of marriage equality is going to continue to drive the housing market and lead to household formations, in addition to more LGBT couples to buy homes together,” Jeff Berger, founder and CEO of the National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals in Jupiter, told the Miami Herald.

“We’re an advocacy organization that works closely with the National Association of Realtors diversity committee,” Berger added. “It was our organization that brought forward the proposals to NAR to include both sexual orientation and gender identity to the NAR code of ethics.”

Berger founded NAGLREP in 2007. And by 2008, Berger’s group started lobbying the National Association of Realtors to adopt protections regarding sexual orientation – which the organization eventually did.
