Fort Lauderdale hotel scores $18M construction loan

Florida’s first Tryp-branded hotel just broke ground in Fort Lauderdale after receiving $18.4 million in construction financing.

Dubbed the Tryp Maritime by Windham, the hotel is being built on a 2.4-acre site at 2161 West State Road 84.

It will have 150 rooms, amenities like a European tapas bar and a nautical style to appeal to members of the marine industry, such as local boat dealers and marinas, the Sun Sentinel reported in January. The $23 million hotel’s groundbreaking was originally slated for March of this year.

The Tryp is being developed by Hotel at Marina Bay, a company linked to Jack Taplin of South Florida. His company acquired the land for an unknown amount in 2000, according to Broward County property records. Branch Banking & Trust Co. issued the $18.4 million construction financing that was recorded Friday.

Tryp is a hotel brand owned by Wyndham Worldwide, a hospitality company based in New Jersey. The company acquired Tryp in 2010 for approximately $43 million, according to a news release about the sale.

The brand has 110 hotels throughout South America and Europe, though only three of those are in the U.S. — two in New York City and one in New Jersey.
