The town council of Palm Beach extended from 2025 to 2050 the deadline for the owner of The Breakers Hotel to build 251 residences on hotel property.

The owner of The Breakers, the Kenan family, isn’t planning residential construction on hotel property but wanted to extend its legal entitlement to do so, said Paul Leone, president of The Breakers.

The town council also extended from 2025 to 2050 the time period during which the golf course at The Breakers will remain open space.

The owner of The Breakers has the right to construct 251 apartments or condominium units under a planned unit development approved by the town council in 1971.

Martin Klein, chairman of the Palm Beach Planning and Zoning Commission, said denying an extension of the residential construction deadline  would have encouraged the Kenan family to start building homes on hotel property within the next several years. [Palm Beach Daily News]Mike Seemuth
