Genting submits new FAA application for former Miami Herald site

The former site of the Miami Herald in downtown Miami may soon see some activity. 

Genting filed a new application on Monday with the Federal Aviation Administration for three towers on the land at 1 Herald Plaza, according to the Next Miami. Each tower would be 649 feet above sea level, or 642 feet above ground.

Genting’s waterfront Resorts World Miami property was previously granted FAA approval for towers of the same height, but that expired earlier this month.

The Malaysian developer paid $236 million for the 5.65-acre site in 2011, and the land has sat vacant since Genting knocked down the Miami Herald building in 2015. But the FAA application isn’t the first sign of new activity. In October, the company unveiled plans for a 50-slip mega-yacht harbor behind the land, a project would be made possible by a proposed boat slip swap.

Genting had originally proposed a large-scale casino resort called Resorts World Miami on the land, but its attempts to lobby state and county officials to allow gambling on the site have so far failed. [The Next Miami] – Katherine Kallergis
