Developer seeks rezoning for 215 units on riverfront site in Fort Lauderdale

Whiddon Family is seeking permission from Fort Lauderdale’s Development Review Committee on Tuesday to build 215 units on a 12.5 acre parcel currently zoned for single-family residential.

The property along the south fork of the New River and canal that feeds the river has single-family houses owned by Angelyn S. Whiddon and Laurel A. Jelstrom at 1131 and 1151 Southwest 9th Avenue, as well as three parcels of vacant land owned by Page 32 LLC, managed by Scott Whiddon.

“It is too early to say whether the project’s residential units will be sold or leased, but the Whiddon family has a preference for ownership units at this time,” the attorney representing the Whiddon family, Steven W. Wherry, told the South Florida Business Journal.

The Whiddon family owns Causeway Lumber, which has been in Fort Lauderdale for over 75 years, the Business Journal reported.

Wherry told the Business Journal the developer would preserve much of the tree canopy on the property and dedicate land for the construction of a new southbound right turn lane to relieve traffic congestion. [South Florida Business Journal] — Gabrielle Paluch
