Construction worker at Met project in downtown Miami falls multiple stories

Updated, 2:40 p.m., May 2: A construction worker was hospitalized this morning after falling to the 34th or 35th floor of the Met Square project in downtown Miami.

The worker fell three to four floors down a shaft in the building, at 300 Southeast Third Street, NBC Miami and Local 10 reported. He was taken to the hospital. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident.

MDM Development Group and Orlando-based Zom are building Avant at Met Square. The 43-story building broke ground in 2015 and will feature a Silverspot Cinema, retail and restaurants, and 391 apartments once it’s completed. Zom closed on a $101 million construction loan for apartment component last summer. Suffolk Construction is the general contractor.

Suffolk released the following statement on Tuesday: “Our organization takes safety very seriously, and the wellbeing of our workers and the communities where we build is our top priority. The unfortunate incident that occurred early this morning involved one of our trade partners, and we are currently investigating the cause. Our thoughts continue to be with the individual and his family.”

MDM is the master developer of the Metropolitan Miami projects, which include the already completed Met 1, a mixed-use condo tower; Met 2, the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, Hotel Beaux Arts Miami, db Bistro Moderne and Wells Fargo Financial Center; and Met 3, a mixed-use apartment tower with a Whole Foods Market.
