Miami-based firm wins $27.6M women’s prison project in Panama

IBT Group of Miami won the bidding for a the $27.6 million contract to build a new women’s prison for the government of Panama, which aims to alleviate overcrowding at the sole existing women’s prison in Central American nation.

“The design of the new center also will be inclined toward the physical and psychological well-being of inmates in compliance with the Panamanian law aimed at improving the living conditions of women prisoners,” Daniel Toledano, managing director and chief operating officer of IBT Group of Miami, said in a prepared statement

IBT will design, construct and equip a new women’s prison with capacity for 732 inmates.

The new 161,459-square-foot prison complex will have a school, chapel, auditorium, health clinic and maternity home, plus sports fields and facilities for making clothing.

The construction site is in the Panamanian district of Pacora, east of the Panama City metropolitan area.

IBT recently finished the first phase of the reconstruction and expansion of a 257-bed hospital in Panama. The $125 million project to upgrade and expand Anita Moreno Regional Hospital is scheduled for completion next year.
