Forest products company Weyerhauser applied to the city of Gainesville to rezone 1,779 acres in the city for residential and commercial development.

City commissioners will review the company’s proposed site plan and its rezoning petition on Jan. 18.

Weyerhauser proposed a site development with as many as 1,300 residential units and about 30,000 square feet of retail store space.

The city’s plan board has granted preliminary approval of Weyerhauser’s petition to change the zoning of the 1,779-acre site from Alachua County Agriculture district to City of Gainesville Planned Development district.

The land is located on both sides of State Road 121 in northwestern Gainesville.

Weyerhauser may sell the land to a developer if city commissioners approve the company’s rezoning application, according to city planner Forrest Eddleton. [Gainesville Sun]Mike Seemuth
