October occupancy increased at South Florida hotels
Higher occupancy and room rates in October offset September slowdown due to Hurricane Irma
October occupancy rates rose from last year’s levels at South Florida hotels, offsetting the business slowdown that Hurricane Irma caused in September.
The October occupancy rate among hotels in Broward County was 76 percent, an increase from 68.2 percent last year, when fears of mosquitos carrying the Zika virus thinned tourist traffic.
Tennessee-based STR, a hotel industry research firm, also reported that the daily room rate at Broward hotels averaged $127.34 in October, up from $118.29 in October 2016.
In Palm Beach County, the hotels’ October occupancy rate increased to 75.7 percent from 65.2 percent last year. The daily room rate among the county’s hotels averaged $138.42, up from $132.41 last year.
The October occupancy rate among Miami-Dade County hotels increased from last year’s level to 76.4 percent this year. The county’s average daily room rate in October also increased to $161.94. [Sun-Sentinel] – Mike Seemuth
