Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the county’s housing department are proposing a new kind of mixed-use development for Miami.

The school system and housing department are proposing a middle school with apartments for teachers as part of Southside Elementary’s expansion in the Brickell area. The mid-rise building would have residential units on the ground floor and classrooms above. The school district would fund part of the development, and a private developer would finance the rest with federal tax credits, according to the Miami Herald.

The project would rise on county-owned land that’s home to the abandoned Medvin Apartments complex.

Also in the works is a planned rental complex with as many as 300 units next to Phillis Wheatley Elementary at 1801 Northwest First Place. The development would offer workforce housing, but teachers would be given priority, according to the Herald. The nonprofit Miami Homes For All developed the plan with a $215,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase. Miami’s Omni Community Redevelopment Area also agreed to back the project. If approved, the county would go out to bid for private developers.

The proposals are geared toward helping teachers deal with the rising cost of living in Miami-Dade County. [Miami Herald] – Amanda Rabines
