Related sues Gran Paraiso crane suppliers over collapse during Hurricane Irma
Developer also had a crane collapse at Auberge site in Fort Lauderdale
The Related Group is suing the companies that provided a tower crane that collapsed at an Edgewater construction site during Hurricane Irma.
Related’s PRH Paraiso Two LLC and PRH NE 31st Street LLC are suing Connecticut-based manufacturer Terex Corp. and Pennsylvania-based Maxim Crane Works LP in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, alleging the crane was defective, and that the collapse damaged Gran Paraiso, one of the four towers in the Paraiso condo complex in Edgewater, the Daily Business Review reported.
The crane was supposed to be able to withstand winds stronger than Hurricane Irma, according to the complaint. Winds reached 81 miles per hour and wind gusts hit 99 miles per hour in parts of the county during the hurricane, which made landfall Sept. 10.
Maxim claims L&R Construction should pay for repairs, retrieval costs and continued rent tied to the collapse.
The suit is one of at least two South Florida lawsuits related to cranes that collapsed during the hurricane. Earlier this year, the contractor for X Miami, L&R Structural Corp., sued Maxim, the same crane supplier, alleging negligence, breach of express warranty, breach of lease and product liability. Property Markets Group is developing X Miami, a luxury rental tower in downtown Miami.
