Lagunitas Brewing Co. buys Wynwood property

The company's presence adds to an increasing number of breweries in the area

A major brewer out of California is tapping into Wynwood.

Lagunitas Brewing Company affiliate Cerveceria La Tropical USA LLC paid $10.53 million for a warehouse at 42 and 50 Northeast 25th Street, adding to a growing list of breweries in the neighborhood.

The seller was Kaco Afe LLC, a company owned by Karen Cohen of Always Flowers. The building sits on a 28,400-square-foot lot and includes parking.

Heineken International closed on full ownership of the brewery last year, and as a result, Lagunitas is no longer considered a craft brewery.

Other breweries in the area include Wynwood Brewing Company and J. Wakefield Brewing. Concrete Beach Brewery, which is owned by Samuel Adams’ parent company Alchemy & Science, opened in an 11,000-square-foot warehouse in 2015 at 235 Northwest 24th Street.

Last year, Anheuser-Busch’s Veza Sur opened a 3,800-square-foot brewhouse and taproom at 55 Northwest 25th Street.

Cohen of Always Flowers paid about $2.2 million for the 22,000-square-foot warehouse in 2011, according to property records. That means she sold it for nearly five times the price she paid seven years ago.

Lagunitas has taprooms in Chicago, Seattle and at its headquarters in Petaluma, California, according to its website.
