Tom Cruise moving into his Clearwater penthouse near Scientology HQ
He sold his properties in LA, including a Beverly Hills compound for $39M
UPDATED, Aug. 5, 7:45 p.m.: People Magazine reported that Tom Cruise is wrapping up renovations of his penthouse apartment in Clearwater near the headquarters of the Church of Scientology International.
The 56-year-old movie star sold his properties in Los Angeles, including a sprawling compound in Beverly Hills that went for $39 million.
Cruise has been a Scientologist since the 1980s, and he is a close friend of the church’s leader, David Miscavige, and members of his family, according to People.
The New York Post reported in 2016 that Cruise wanted to move to Clearwater to help the Church of Scientology expand its membership.
The Post also reported that Scientologists comprise 10 percent of the population of Clearwater, where the church owns nearly 70 buildings spread over 10 square miles. [People Magazine] – Mike Seemuth
An earlier version of this story incorrectly implied that Cruise just purchased his penthouse in Clearwater. He purchased the unit in 2016 and is completing renovations.
